Colorado Trip - Butterfly Pavillion

We thought it would be fun to go the the Butterfly Pavillion. We were lucky because the day we went was the first day they were open for the season. We went there thinking there would only be butterflies but there was a lot more than that. There were all kinds of insects, star fish, turtles and lots of butterflies. One of the highlights for Elizabeth was that she got to hold a huge hairy, scary (in my opinion) spider. Elizabeth was very brave and decided she wanted to hold "Rosie". Bruce and I passed! So now she can say:

Op maandag zijn we naar de vlindertuin geweest. Dit was de eerste dag dat het open was dit seizoen. We dachten dat er alleen maar vlinders zouden zijn, maar er waren nog vele andere dingen te zien. Allerlei soorten insectren, ster vissen, schildpadden en veel vlinders. Een van de hoogte punten voor Elizabeth was dat ze een hele grote harige (en enge) spin had vastgehouden. Elizabeth was zeer moedig en besloot dat ze "Rosie" wilde vasthouden. Nu kan ze in elk geval zeggen:

I held Rosie.... A Tarantula!!!!!!!!

It was soo cute to see her hold the tarantula. She was not afraid at all. She thought it was very fascinating. I am very proud of my "big girl". Here is the video of her holding the spider.

Het was zo schattig om haar te zien de spin vast te houden. Ze was helemaal niet bang. Ze vond het heel interessant. Ik ben erg trots op mijn "grote meid". Hier is een video waar ze de spin vasthoudt.

zag een schildpad,

and lots of butterflies.

en heel veel vlinders.

Colorado Trip - Aquarium, Zoo & Casa Bonita

On Friday afternoon we were planning to go to the Aquarium in Denver. It was already 6 pm by the time we arrived there so we decided to first have dinner at the aquarium restaurant. On one of the restaurant was a big aquarium with hunderds of (big) fish in there. There were also several shark (one of about 5 feet long) in there. There was even a diver swimming around. He would wave at Elizabeth, she thought this was fun. It was really a fun place to eat. By the time we were done it was getting quite late and we really didn't want to go to the actual aquarium anymore. We made Elizabeth believe this was the aquarium and she was happy (and so were we) and then continued to our hotel :).

We waren vrijdag middag van plan om naar het Aquarium in Denver te gaan. Het was al 18:00 uur voordat we in Denver aankwamen, dus we besloten om eerst maar even te eten in het aquarium restaurant. Een kant van het restaurant was een groot aquarium (zie foto) met honderden vissen erin. Er waren ook een aantal haaien (een was wel anderhalve meter lang). Er was zelfs een duiker die erin rondzwom. Elizabeth vond het wel heel leuk (maar ook wel een beetje eng) dat hij naar haar zwaaide. Toen we klaar waren met eten was het al aardig laat en wij wilden eigenlijk niet meer het echte aquarium in. We deden net alsof dit het aquarium was en ze geloofde het en we zijn toen vertrokken naar het hotel.

The next morning we got ready and went to the zoo. This was one of Elizabeth's highlight. We had beautiful weather (not too warm and not too cold).

De volgende ochtend maakte we ons klaar om naar de dierentuin te gaan. Elizabeth had er echt veel zin in. Het weer was heel mooi (niet te warm en niet te koud).

Since we were a little limited on time we let Elizabeth decide what she wanted to see. She and Bruce looked at the map together to see where all the animals were and while we were walking she kept looking at her own map (it was quite cute). She really wanted to see the elephants and luckily they were not too far from the entrance.

Aangezien we niet heel veel tijd hadden in de dierentuin lieten we Elizabeth beslissen wat ze wilde zien. Elizabeth en Bruce keken samen op de dierentuin kaart om te kijken waar alle dieren waren en toen we gingen lopen bleef ze maar op haar eigen kaartje kijken (heel schattig). Ze wilde heel graag de olifanten zien en gelukkig waren die niet te ver bij de ingang vandaan want ze had even nergens anders oog voor.

After the elephants she saw the merry go round and really wanted to go on it. We were one of the firsts in line and so she could basically pick were to sit on. She decided she wanted the Tiger. She would wave everytime she would go round.

Na de olifanten zag ze de draaimolen en ze wilde daar heel graag op. We waren bijna voor in de lijn en daarom kon ze feitelijk kiezen waar ze op wilde zitten. Ze koos de tijger. Elke keer als ze weer voorbij kwam zwaaide ze even.

This was what Thomas was doing most of the time. His life is quite boring right now.

Dit is wat Thomas grotendeels deed. Zijn leven is op het moment aardig saai.

After the Zoo we went to Casa Bonita. This is a restaurant Bruce went to a few times when he was younger and he wanted to take Elizabeth there. Casa Bonita is somewhat like the Mayan here in Salt Lake but much better. They had Cliff divers, Puppets shows, Flame jugglers, Caverns and Caves, Amusement Arcade and lots more. The place is huge it seats 1100 people. The food was not quite the best (nicely said) but the entertainment was good. I did like the all you can eat sopapillas with honey. We had a good time until Bruce decided to take Elizabeth on a little walk and go into "Black Bart's cave". This was a narrow scary (for a 3 year old) cave with skulls, scary noises and lots of scary things. Elizabeth was not the same after that.

Na de dierentuin gingen we naar Casa Bonita voor lunch. Dit is een restaurant waar Bruce goeide herinnering aan had van toen hij jong was. Het eten is niet echt lekker maar je gaat erheen voor de ambiance. Er is vanalles te doen voor kinderen. Er zijn klif duikers, grotten, spelletjes en nog vele andere dingen. Elizabeth vond het heel leuk totdat Bruce haar meenam in een piratengrot met schedels, enge geluiden etc. Daarna was ze een beetje van slag.

After finishing our late lunch we left to go down to Colorado Springs the meet the Bentley's. Bruce has know Rick since college and Rick and Marissa came to the Netherlands for our wedding. We got to their place around 4 pm. Elizabeth had never met them before but felt comfortable very quickly. This was very nice because we were going out with Rick and Marissa that night and left Elizabeth at their house with their children and a babysitter. We spent a nice evening toghether and had a very nice dinner. Luckily Thomas was asleep for most of it. When we got home Elizabeth had gone to sleep. I was very impressed how resilient she was. She had no problems going to sleep with us not being there in a completely strange home.

Na de lunch reden we naar Colorado Springs naar de Bentley's. Bruce kent Rick van de Universiteit en Rick en Marissa waren ook naar onze bruiloft in Nederland gekomen. We kwamen daar rond 16:00 uur aan. Elizabeth had ze nog nooit ontmoet maar voelde zich al snel op haar gemak met hun kinderen. Dit was goed want wij gingen 's avonds met Rick en Marissa uit eten en Elizabeth zou met hun kinderen en een babysitter thuis blijven. Wij hadden een gezellige avond samen en lekker eten. Gelukkig sliep Thomas zo'n beetje de hele tijd. Toen we thuiskwamen sliep Elizabeth al. Ik was ervan onder de indruk dat ze geen problemen had om daar te blijven en te gaan slapen in een vreemd huis zonder dat wij er waren.

The next morning we had 9 am church (I had hoped for a later church schedule since we have 9 am church at our ward:( ) I gave Elizabeth the option to either go to primary or to the nursery (since Marissa would be in nursery with her daughter). She said she would go to nursery (just) because she was hungry (snacks in nursery and not in primary hahahaha). During nursery she kept telling Marissa that she was a big girl and (pointing at the others) that the others were all small (uhuh).

De volgende morgen begon de kerk al om 9 uur 's ochtends (I had gehoopd dat ze later kerk hadden sinds wij zelf ook 9 uur kerk hebben). Ik zei tegen Elizabeth dat ze mocht kiezen of ze naar het jeugdwerk wilde gaan of naar de kinderkamer (sinds Marissa in de kinderkamer zou zijn met haar dochter). Ze zei dat ze (alleen maar) naar de kinderkamer wilde omdat ze honger had (in de kinderkamer krijgen de kinderen hier snacks en niet in het jeugdwerk hahahaha). Het was heel grappig want Elizabeth zei een aantal keren tegen Marissa dat zij al een groot meisje was en dat al de andere kinderen in de kinderkamer heel klein waren (jaja). Ze wilden er voor zorgen dat iedereen wist dat ze eigenlijk niet in de kinderkamer hoorde te zijn.

We spent the rest of the day with Rick and Marissa and had a very pleasant time. It was so good to see them again and it was so nice of them to let us stay with them. That night we headed back to Denver.

We zijn de rest van de dag bij Rick en Marissa gebleven en hadden een hele gezellig tijd samen. Het was goed om ze weer te zien. 's Avonds reden we terug naar Denver.

Colorado Trip - Hotel Fun

Elizabeth loved sleeping at the different hotels. We tried to get suites in most hotels to make it a little bit easier for the children to go to sleep at night and for us to stay awake. At this particular hotel we had a normal room reserved but when we arrived we asked for an upgrade and we got it. The suit was enormous. The next day we found out that we had been really lucky because when we checked out we were told that the man who upgraded us to the suit shouldn't have done it. She said: "The men tend to be tooooo nice" (And looking at the lady's reaction he was probably going to get into trouble). Well, we did not complain :)

Elizabeth vond het allemachtig prachtig om in de verschillende hotels te slapen. We probeerde suites te krijgen in de meeste hotels, zodat het iets makkelijker voor de kinderen zou zijn om te gaan slapen en zodat wij nog wat langer wakker konden blijven. In dit specifieke hotel hadden we een gewone kamer gereserveerd, maar toen we bij het hotel aankwamen vroegen we of ze ons een upgrade voor een suite konden geven. Gelukkig was de man aardig genoeg om dit te doen. De suit was echt super groot. Toen we de volgende dag uitcheckten vertelde de receptioniste dat de man dat niet had moeten doen. Ze zei: "De mannen hebben de neiging om iets te aardig te zijn" (aan haar gezicht te zien was ze nog niet klaar met hem). Wij klaagden in elk geval niet.


The other thing that Elizabeth loves about hotels is to sit on top of the luggage on the cart.

Elizabeth vindt het tevens ook heel leuk om op de baggage karretjes te zitten en zo rond te rijden.

Colorado Trip - Ouray & Telluride

We decided to go on a little trip to Colorado. Since we were going to drive a lot we did not want to take our own car but rented a minivan. We got lucky and got to pick which one wanted at the rental place. We ended up with a brand new Chrysler Town and Country it had 51 miles on it. Lucky us! It was so nice to have a car with lots of space. Elizabeth was soo excited about our new car. She was going in and out while I was packing it.

We zijn op een korte vakantie naar Colorado geweest. Aangezien we veel zouden rijden (zo'n 2400 km) leek het ons niet zo een goed idee om onze eigen auto mee te nemen, dus hadden we een minivan gehuurd. Gelukkig mochten bij het verhuurbedrijf onze eigen auto uitzoeken. We vonden een splinternieuwe Chrysler Town and Country die nog maar 75 km had gereden. Het was echt lekker om een auto te hebben met veel ruimte. Elizabeth vond het echt allermachtig prachtig. Ze heeft denk ik elk hoekje van de auto ontdekt terwijl ik aan het inpakken was.

I sat in the back quite a bit to keep Thomas happy. Happy baby = Happy mom.

Ik zat grotendeels achterin zodat ik ervoor kon zorgen dat Thomas blij bleef.

Blije baby = blije mama.

Our first stop was Ouray a little village nested in the mountains. It was soo beautiful. As you looked up to the mountains you could see waterfalls. It was beautiful.

Onze eerste stop was in Ouray, een klein dorpje dat zich letterlijk tussen de bergen bevind. Het was echt heel mooi. Je kon watervallen zien vanuit het dorpje.

Bruce was helping Elizabeth gain an interest into history by playing the game - find the ...... clock/tower/door on the real building in front of us.

Bruce en Elizabeth keken naar verschilldende historische monumenten. Zij vond het heel interessant en om het leuk te maken zei hij: Vind ...... de klok/toren/deur dat je op dit plaatje ziet op het echte gebouw voor ons.

After picking up some lunch items at the only grocery store (which was really small) in time we headed towards Telluride. This was another beautiful city nested in the mountains. It was a very nice ride up there. It looked a lot like the Scottisch Highlands but it had the snow packed peaks of the rockies in the background (I should have taking a picture).

Nadat we wat lunch hadden gehaald bij de enige supermarkt in het dorp reden we richting Telluride. Dit was nog zo'n mooi stadje omringt door bergen. Het was echt een hele mooie rit daarnaartoe. Het leek op het scotse landschap met veel heuvels en dan op de achtergrond waren de hoge bergen met sneeuw erop (jammergenoeg heb ik er geen foto van gemaakt).

When we got to Telluride it had started snowing and we couldn't even see the mountains (which were in walking distance from the street we were driving on). Luckily it cleared up.

Vlak voordat we in Telluride aankwamen begon het te sneeuwen en we konden de bergen niet eens zien (de bergen waren op loopafstand van waar wij reden). Gelukkig klaarde het snel op.

There was some sort of music festival going on and they had set up these "things" (don't know what they are) all throughout town. There were little wooden things sticking out you could hold on to and then make the whole thing twirl while running around it. Elizabeth had a fun time doing that. I kept her quite busy.

Er was een of ander muziek festival aan de gang en er stonden allemaal van deze gekleurde "dingen" in het dorp. Er zaten houten dingen aanvast die je vast kon houden en dan draaide het hele ding rond. Elizabeth vond dit hartstikke leuk en dit hield haar lekker bezig.

After Telluride we headed for Gunnison were we spent the night. We past the Continental divide. The Continental Divide in the Americas is the line that divides the flow of water between the Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean. Rain or snow that drains on the east side of the Continental Divide flows toward the Atlantic Ocean while precipitation on the west side drains and flows toward the Pacific Ocean.

Na Telluride reden we door richt Gunnison. Hier gingen we overnachten. We zijn langs de Continental Divide gereden. Dit is het punt in de VS waar het water dat aan de ene kant van deze lijn terecht komt naar de Atlantische Oceaan stroomt en het water dat aan de andere kant terecht komt stroomt naar de Stille Oceaan.

Tulip Festival / Tulpen Festival

The weather was so nice today that we decided to go to Thankgiving Point to see the tulips and take some nice pictures. Almost all the tulips were out and they were beautiful. Elizabeth loved running around with her friend Emelia. They had a blast together.

Elizabeth has become a little picture poser. It has become a little bit easier to take pictures of her. Since she was a little girl she would never sit still long enough to take a picture (ask my sister-in-law Ellen :)). And yes I did bring Thomas (he's in none of the pictures). He was just enjoying the stroller too much and the sun was too bright to take him out.

Aren't these tulips beautiful.

Elizabeth was all stretched out on this little bench and said "Look mom, I'm Ariel (the little mermaid)". We are all into princesses these days.

Strong boy! Sterke jongen!

Look what I started to do yesterday. Now I can finally start to see the world from a different perspective. The ceiling was not that interesting anymore.

Kijk eens wat ik sinds gisteren kan doen. Nu kan ik de wereld eindelijk van een ander perspectief bekijken. Het plafond was niet echt interessant meer.
